The Story Behind GarageGive.com

I had been given a book by one of my mentors, Steve Chandler.  It was a book by Matt Furey called "101 Ways to Magnetize Money".  The book had been sitting in my "To Read" pile for a while.  But I eventually got around to reading it.  In that book, #62 is called "Give Stuff Away".  In it Matt quotes Bob Proctor as having said that people that do garage sales would be much better off if they just gave the goods they no longer needed away.

Of course the idea of giving stuff away that I no longer needed wasn't new.  I have always been a fan of both reducing clutter and giving stuff away.  We routinely purged stuff and gave it to Goodwill.  But the idea of doing a "Free Garage Sale" stuck with me and I knew I had to do something about it.  I thought of all the people that do garage sales - there must be thousands of them happening on any given weekend.  I thought of how they might pull in a few hundred dollars for all their effort and still be left with a lot of their stuff at the end which they would either give away or trash.  I thought how just by giving their stuff away for free they could really improve their own lives way beyond the value of the cash they would otherwise bring in.

My wife had recently signed up to participate in a neighborhood garage sale on a particular day a few weeks away. I decided that was our perfect opportunity to put this idea to the test.  With renewed vigor I started going through all our stuff and having our kids go through all of their stuff.  I wanted to really purge our home of anything that no longer served a meaningful purpose in our lives- regardless of how much it cost to begin with or was worth now.  We collected a lot of stuff- I was surprised by how much given that we routinely purged and gave away already- but I was on a higher mission this time.  I had a couple of my sons make a big sign that just said "Everything Free" and on the appointed day (October 24, 2009) we had our first official "Garage Give."

The next thing I knew was that it wasn't enough for me to just do this myself, but I needed to create a website for the promotion of the idea and to do what I could to help spread the idea far and wide. I sat down at the computer and started searching for good domain names that were available- and my first choice was available- GarageGive.com.  I reserved it and over the next few weeks built a simple website that you are now looking at.
